Tommy Makinen (born 1972) is one of the most awarded advertising talents in Finland with 2 Cannes Lions, numerous other international awards, and over 60 national awards.
Tommy took part in a New Advertising Talent competition in 1993 and was chosen from thousands of others to work as a Junior Copywriter at SEK & Grey in Helsinki. By the age of 23 he was already working as a Senior Copywriter for the biggest Finnish brands like Helsingin Sanomat Newspaper and Paulig Coffee.
In 1998 Tommy joined TBWA\Helsinki, first working as a Senior Copywriter and later on as a Creative Director. During the next 15 years, Tommy and TBWA created successful and award-winning campaigns for brands like Veikkaus Betting, MTV3 TV Channel, Sonera Mobile Operations, Pfizer, Amnesty, and Greenpeace.
In 2013 Tommy wanted to challenge himself again. He sat down with his good fellows at Folk Finland to build up a true, competitive challenger for the Finnish advertising scene. Since then Folk has been one of the fastest growing and most awarded agencies in the country – making Tommy feel like he’s in his early twenties again.
